Success in the latest ISPWP wedding photography contest

I had some fantastic news over the bank holiday weekend. From my entries into the latest ISPWP quarterly contest I had seven (yes, seven!) placings across six categories. They range from a couple of 5th places to a couple of 19th places, but given the number of entries from across the world that are narrowed down to 20 in each category, any image that gets placed is a great result. The successful images are below – three from Shoko and Mike’s wedding, two from Ruth and Andrew’s and one each from Hannah and Matt’s and Mel and James’ weddings.

Apologies to anyone that has had trouble accessing my website over the last couple of days. The company that hosts my site appears to have been targeted by hackers, and my site was one of those left producing Google malware warnings as a result. All back to normal now!

ISPWP Contest – Award-winning wedding photography

I was recently accepted into the ISPWP (International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers) which is a group of the world’s greatest wedding photographers under one roof. Acceptance into the fold is pretty tricky and only the best make it through the application process, which is more than can be said for many other ‘esteemed’ photography organisations.

The majority of the membership are based in the USA, and there are only a few UK members, so I was overwhelmed to find out this week that I had five images placed in the top ten of their respective categories in the latest quarterly contest! The images, associated info and judges comments are below.

What’s in a name?

Unfortunately quite a lot at the moment if you are my friend and fellow photographer David Calvert.

David has just discovered this in light of the recent stories run in the daily papers suggesting that Jon Venables was going by the name of David Calvert. Since then David’s photography site has had over 50,000 hits. Normally I’d be thrilled that his site is so popular, but at the moment he is obviously very concerned.

As his colleague I am doing all I can to help David disassociate himself from this dreadful story. He is in no way related to David Calvert of Fleetwood, who has also been highlighted in the press and is in no way connected to the tragic case of Jamie Bulger.

David, 46, is a national award winning photographer and his business David Calvert Photography, based in Hertfordshire, specialises in family and child portraiture. David has my complete support in these difficult circumstances and we hope very much that they pass without impact to him, his own family or his business.

Latest WPJA Success!

I found out at the weekend that one of my images from last year has placed in the latest WPJA wedding photography contest. It’s a shot from Emma & Ian’s wedding in Dorset last August, and it placed 19th in the ‘Bride Getting Ready’ category. You can see more images from this wedding in my galleries section.

Top Ten UK Winter Wedding Photographer

In their November issue, Professional Photographer magazine have named me as one of the Top Ten Winter Wedding Photographers in the UK. I really enjoy working with the different lighting conditions and obstacles that a winter wedding can throw at me, so it’s great to be recognised for my work outside of the normal summer season.

You may remember a few months back that I was selected by Randolph Quan as one of the top ten wedding photographers in the UK. Well, Randolph’s list has made it into print, specifically in the September 2009 issue of Photo Pro magazine. Better be quick if you want to check it out though as the next issue is published in just over a week.

Great news this week that I have achieved my best ever result in the latest quarterly WPJA contest. The below image from Alice & Al’s wedding in Cumbria was awarded 2nd place in the ‘Details (Found)’ category.

These were the judges comments:

“Very well composed. This is the epitome of a great detail. It is a moment in and of itself but it allows the viewer to really get inside that moment and see what the photographer saw. Way to take a risk and go tight and taking that risk was rewarded big time by a great, sexy photo.”

Obviously, the pressure is now on to get a first placed image in the next contest.

Agata and Martin – Wedding Photography at Beverley Minster, Yorkshire

Beverley Minster provided the amazing setting for Agata and Martin’s ceremony, although as the wedding photographer I was not allowed to photograph the wedding ceremony itself.

Then it was off to the KP Golf Club in Pocklington where much Polish vodka was drunk, and a good time was had by all.
